Applying for Reimbursement Funds:
The highest priority of the Search and Rescue Fund is to reimburse county sheriffs for mission costs incurred in
rescues of persons having paid into the fund through surcharges on hunting and fishing licenses, registrations of
boats, off-highway vehicles, Habitat stamps, and snowmobiles, and the voluntary purchase of Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and
Rescue (CORSAR) cards. If funds remain after all missions for these "licensed" persons have been reimbursed, the
fund pays for missions for relatives of licensed persons. A third tier of funding is available at the end of the
year for costly missions for unlicensed individuals.
End-of-Year Awards:
Payments from the SAR fund are made on a tiered basis. If funding remains after all eligible mission expenses are
paid, the department accepts requests from sheriffs for training and equipment payments at the end of each year.
Application forms are available below or by e-mailing or calling Steve Denney at 970.248.7310. SAR teams should
coordinate their requests through the local county sheriff's office.
Applications are due by April 1st of every year. The SAR Advisory Council makes funding recommendations to the DOLA Executive Director who makes final awards. Awards are based on a variety of factors, but are weighted to mission volume and local commitment to funding SAR. Awards range in size from $500-$15,000. Items historically funded include communications equipment, ATV's, snowmobiles, watercraft, rescue equipment and specialized training.
